Former indie queen
Liz Phair, a native of Chicago's suburbs, took the rock world by storm in the early 1990s with the release of her debut record, “Exile in Guyville,” a collection of stripped-down, lo-fi rock tunes that cast a caustic and often brutally funny eye on contemporary male-female relationships. Phair underwent a pop makeover at the beginning of the 21st century that divided her audience, but her most recent record, “Funstyle,” has been hailed as a return to form. She plays her former hometown this weekend.

Outlaw country sound
The late, great Waylon Jennings is one of the irreplaceable treasures of country music. Whitey Morgan and the 78's evoke the best of Jennings' sound with their gritty, old-school honky-tonk tunes, while adding a dose of Midwestern rock attitude every so often. (The band hails from Michigan.) Whitey and the boys, whose acclaimed self-titled 2010 release came out on local label Bloodshot Records, play in the suburbs next week.
8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, at Fitzgerald's Nightclub, 6615 Roosevelt Road, Berwyn. $5. fitzgeraldsnightclub.com.
