Barrington library hosts talk on water

• “Water Above, Water Below : Connections & Projections,” 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, Barrington Area Library. Learn how homeowners can protect water now and for future generations. Hosted by Citizens for Conservation. Janet Agnoletti, executive director of the Barrington Area Council of Governments, and Patsy Mortimer, coordinator of Flint Creek Watershed Partnership, will discuss interactions between groundwater, natural areas and development. Morton Arboretum

The following events are scheduled to take place at the Morton Arboretum, on Route 53 at I-88 in Lisle. For more details including admission rates, see mortonarb.org.

• Rent a pair of snowshoes from the Visitor Center (rental is $8 for up to three hours, limited quantities) or bring your own cross-country skis to trek to areas not available during warmer months. Snowshoeing allowed only when there is 4 inches or more of snow on the ground. All ages, rentals at Visitor Center from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Closed New Year's Day.

•“Nature Unframed: Art at the Arboretum,” May 19-Nov. 27. Eleven renowned artists from around the world create art to exist in and among the trees. Pieces include a dead tree completely bound in bright yellow cotton, one where branches poke through a “canvas” and a tree covered in crocheted pieces representing lichen, fungi and algae living symbiotically.

Chicago Botanic Garden

•“Wild Orchids: A Vanishing World,” spring orchid show with more than 20 vendors selling rare and exotic species, March 26-27. Orchids are on display at Nichols Hall, throughout the Garden's exhibit halls and Greenhouse Galleries. Photographers are welcome between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. on Sunday. Admission to the show and to the Garden is free. Parking is $20; parking is free for Garden members. Hosted by Illinois Orchid Society, hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, March 26-27. •Tri Village Garden Club: Through Jan. 31: Exhibit of garden photos by members and their families at Hanover Park Park District Community Center Gallery, 1919 Walnut St., Hanover Park. March 3, 9 a.m.: Demonstration on the care and sharpening of lawn tools. April 7, 9 a.m.: Demonstration on basic flower arranging. Meetings are held at South Barrington Park District, 3 Tennis Club Lane, at 9 a.m. on the first Thursday of the month. Membership fee is $25 for residents, $35 for nonresidents.
