Wheeling Park District celebrates 50 years

Wheeling Park District will kickoff a yearlong celebration commemorating its 50th anniversary with a free community event from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Community Recreation Center., 333 W. Dundee Road, Wheeling.

The park district started out with just one park on an acre of land and has grown to include 17 sites on 303 acres.

Sunday's celebration will feature food, games, and activities for all ages, including wagon rides through Heritage Park and ice skating on a specially-constructed rink next to the recreation center. Skates will be available, but visitors may bring their own.

Inside the center, guests will enjoy a photo booth, four inflatable games — a 45-foot obstacle course, 18-foot slide, anniversary cake moon jump and safari adventure bus — ping-pong, mini-golf, Twister, Jenga, Uno and Wii games.

There will be historical displays depicting 50 years of park district experiences. Bears fans can watch the game on a large-screen TV in the gym. Food will be available for a nominal fee. Warm beverages will be served.
