Arlington Hts. students learn about careers

Brianna Kolbus shadowed Arlington Heights Mayor Arlene Mulder for a week as part of an elective class called career connections at Thomas Middle School.

Carol Toussaint, who teaches the class, says 15 to 29 students take the class each semester. Mentors that other eighth graders have shadowed range from a banker to a percussionist.

It is important for students to know the facts about a career before choosing it, said Toussaint. And they should know before they go to high school and start choosing relevant electives.

Thomas O'Rourke, principal of Thomas, praised the class and said it is important for students at this age to keep open minds about what they might aspire to.

After the shadowing each student gives a presentation about the experience, as well as writing about it.

“We love teaching this class. When they come back they realize they have something to offer,” said Toussaint. “Their attitude and physical posture change.”
