Indiana man arrested in 30-year-old murder
A homicide suspect on the lam for 30 years was arrested in Tipp City, Calif., on Monday.
Christopher David Winter, 55, of Indiana, was arrested just after 12:30 p.m. at the Meijer Distribution Center on County Road 25-A in Tipp City, according to Tipp City Patrolman John Paul.
Winter is wanted in connection with a home invasion that led to the death of a man in Los Angeles County, California, in 1981.
Paul said the Tipp City Police Department received information and a warrant Monday from the Dayton office of the FBI for Winter, and three units were sent to the distribution center where he had been tracked by a cell phone tracking device.
Winter was driving a semi-truck for Wenger Trucking of Idaho and was leaving the distribution center when police alerted him with their lights.
“He was compliant. He was arrested without any incident or any problem,” Paul said. “He didn't say a lot pertaining to the arrest. I believe he was aware that an investigation involving him was under way.”
Winter is in the Miami County Jail awaiting extradition to California.
Paul said being involved in an arrest of a three-decade-old case is rare.
“It's a little unusual, but with the DNA advent, we've seen some things that have come through after a few years,” Paul said. “It sounds like something that has came up years later that they are now able to pursue.”
A call to the detective handling the case at the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department to find out specifics of the case was left unanswered Tuesday.
