The skinny: The Flames are the only winless team in Horizon League play, but they have two 2-point losses and one 3-point loss on their resume to suggest how close they are to breaking through. If it happens Thursday night, it will be without senior Brad Birton. The starter must serve a one-game suspension after being ejected from Saturday's game for fighting with Detroit's Eli Holman. UIC could use Birton's toughness against Milwaukee's 6-foot-7, 230-pound Anthony Hill (12.6 ppg, 6.6 rpg), but Paul Carter could pick up the slack there. Carter, by the way, owns three straight double-doubles and six for the year.
