Pets didn't deserve this death penalty

The Muddy Paws animal shelter news first headlined my morning newspaper on Dec. 18. My initial reaction was one of horror and disbelief. As further details were publicized, my emotions escalated to outrage that an individual's blatant lack of concern for animals' rights could occur in an apparently affluent Northwest Chicago suburb, concealed from the public's knowledge.

I was then consumed by pity for these poor creatures, born with a right to live, who had deliberately been subjected to starvation and neglect as a slow death sentence. More facts have recently come out. I experienced anger at the numerous oversights that officials made in their contacts to this facility. These animals who died at Muddy Paws did nothing wrong.

The question in my mind remains unanswered: Why? My focus has now turned to the survivors housed at the Mundelein facility where they are daily gaining strength in their fight to live. These animals are deserving of future loving owners who cherish life.

My desire is that I will never, in my lifetime, hear again of such a pathetic saga of inhumane treatment to animals perpetrated by a human being.
