On TV: The end of 'Love'
HBO's polygamist drama “Big Love” returns, complete with a new title sequence, for its final season at 8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 16, on the premium-cable channel. But, to judge from the fifth-season premiere, it looks to be just playing out the string, so don't expect a revival after last season's morass, which even drew criticism from co-star Chloe Sevigny.
Country cousins
Gwyneth Paltrow plugs her new singing role in “Country Strong” by playing host to NBC's “Saturday Night Live” at 10:30 on WMAQ Channel 5. Fortunately she turns the music-guest duties over to Cee Lo Green.
Chicago debate
It might not be of political interest to suburbanites, but it could be of dramatic interest when the major Chicago mayoral candidates finally all get together for a forum co-sponsored by the Mikva Challenge advocacy group on WTTW Channel 11 at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 17. After dodging numerous similar public events, Rahm Emanuel is expected to take part, along with Gery Chico, Miguel del Valle and Carol Moseley Braun.
Waste Watcher: Stalking heads
Nicole Kidman plays a ruthlessly ambitious TV reporter in Gus Van Sant's savage satire “To Die For,” loosely based on the Pamela Smart scandal. Matt Dillon is along for the ride, and the script is by “The Graduate” screenwriter Buck Henry. It's at 6:45 p.m. today on the Independent Film Channel.
