Elgin grad Granger producing at Eastern
Elgin High School boys basketball product Jeremy Granger has been in a familiar position on the Eastern Illinois University stat sheet this.
Granger, a 6-foot-1-inch junior guard, has been the team's leading scorer 7 times this season.
Granger had 17 points in a recent 78-75 loss at Southeast Missouri. He also had 18 points in an 80-47 victory over Anderson. He also had 15 points each in games against Western Illinois (win) and Tennessee Tech (loss).
To start the week, Granger was averaging a team-best 12.6 points per game. Granger started all of the team's first 15 games and was averaging 34.7 minutes of playing time. Granger was shooting .420 from the field and was also stellar from the free-throw line, shooting .923 (48 of 52).
Granger also contributed 3.5 rebounds per game to go with 18 steals and 3 blocked shots. He also had 60 assists against only 29 turnovers.
Eastern Illinois was 6-9 overall and 2-3 in conference play to begin the week.
Yohn at Bradley: Former St. Edward star Katie Yohn is having a productive sophomore season as a member of the Bradley University women's basketball team.
Yohn, a 5-11 sophomore guard, has been the team's leading scorer in three of the last 6 games and has been the squad's top point-getter 6 times this season already.
Yohn had a team-high 18 points in a recent 73-58 loss to Missouri State. She also had 20 points in an 84-68 setback to Indiana State.
Yohn also had 15 points in a 57-48 win over Northern Illinois and poured in a season-high 26 points in an 81-64 triumph over St. Louis.
To start the week, Yohn had played in 13 games (10 starts) and was averaging 30.8 minutes of action per game. She had made a team-high 31 three-pointers in 97 attempts (. 320 shooting from the 3-point line). Yohn was also shooting .828 from the free-throw line (24-for-29).
Yohn was leading the team in scoring at 13.2 points per contest while also pulling in 3.6 rebounds per game. Yohn also contributed 39 assists (against only 35 turnovers), 15 blocks and 19 assists for the Braves, who started the week 8-7 overall and 1-3 in Missouri Valley Conference play.
Gleason at Loras: Cary-Grove grad Mike Gleason is now a senior guard on the Loras College men's basketball team.
Gleason has been enjoying a prolific season shooting the basketball. He recently had 18 points, all coming on 3-pointers, in Loras' 84-69 conference win over Cornell. Gleason shot 6-for-10 from the 3-point line in the game. He also had 7 rebounds in a half-hour of action.
In prior action, Gleason drained two 3s in an 81-67 conference loss to Buena Vista.
He also had 12 points, including 1 three-pointer, in 32 minutes of action to help Loras record a 76-69 win over Ashford University.
In a 91-83 win against North Park, Gleason really caught fire with a 25-point outing, which included a 7-for-12 effort from the 3-point line.
Loras was 5-9 overall to begin the week.
Kumerow at Whitewater: South Elgin alum Cortney Kumerow is a sophomore forward on the Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team. To start the week, Kumerow had played in all 14 of the team's games and was averaging 7.3 points an 3.6 rebounds per game. She was shooting .481 from the field and .706 from the free-throw line in 14.6 minutes of action per game. Earlier in the season, Kumerow had 17 points in an 83-62 victory over UW-La Crosse. Whitewater was 12-2 and 4-1 in conference play to begin the week.
Bakley at SIU-Edwardsville: Huntley graduate Jordan Bakley is a junior on the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville wrestling team. Bakley, who wrestles at 184 pounds, had 4 victories to start the week, two of which were via pinfall. Bakley is in his first season at Edwardsville after a spectacular career at Harper College. Bakley took third place in the nation last year in helping Harper win an NJCAA national championship. A two-time NJCAA national qualifier, Bakley was named an NJCAA All-American as a sophomore and was named Harper's male athlete of the year and the wrestling squad's MVP. A mathematics major at Edwardsville, Bakley was a two-time academic All-American at Harper.
Heine at Saint Xavier: Hampshire product Chrissy Heine is a freshman forward on the Saint Xavier University women's basketball team. To start the week, Heine had played in 14 games (1 start) and was averaging 11.3 minutes of playing time. Heine was shooting .467 from the field and was averaging 2.7 points and 2.3 rebounds per game. Saint Xavier, ranked fifth in the nation, was 10-5 overall and 4-0 in conference action to start the week.
Whitaker at Washington and Lee: Bartlett product Larry Whitaker had himself a fine outing in a recent contest for the Washington and Lee men's basketball team. In a loss to unbeaten and nationally ranked Virginia Wesleyan, Whitaker posted a team-high 13 points on the strength of 6 of 10 shooting from the field. He also had five rebounds and two steals in 24 minutes of action. Whitaker, a 6-4 freshman forward, had played in 13 games to start the week and was averaging 15.2 minutes of playing time. Whitaker was shooting .521 from the field and .610 from the free-throw line and was averaging 5.8 points and 4.5 rebounds. Washington and Lee was 10-3 and 3-2 in conference at week's beginning.
Moran at Northern Iowa: Jacobs brethren Johnny Moran, a junior guard on the Northern Iowa University men's basketball team, recently scored 16 points (including two 3-pointers) in an 83-77 victory over Bradley. Moran shot 6-for-13 from the field in 35 minutes of action.
Moran also pulled in a team-high 6 rebounds in a 70-45 loss to Indiana State.
In a 65-53 victory over Evansville, Moran had a solid all-around game with 8 points, 3 assists and 4 steals in 35 minutes of play. He committed no turnovers in the game.
Moran started all of the team's first 17 games and was averaging 31.2 minutes of playing time to start the week. Moran was fourth on the team in scoring at 9.5 points per game. He was shooting .408 from the field and was leading the Panthers with 32 three-pointers in 88 attempts (. 364 from the 3-point line). Moran was also averaging 3.2 rebounds and had 34 assists (against only 19 turnovers) and 16 steals to his credit.
Northern Iowa was 11-6 overall and 2-3 in Missouri Valley Conference play to start the week.
Bart at Olivet: Cary-Grove grad Liz Bart is a 5-foot-7-inch freshman guard on the Olivet Nazarene University women's basketball team.
In the team's first 16 games, Bart averaged 10.1 minutes of playing time and was averaging 3.9 points per game. Bart was also 17-for-55 from the 3-point line (. 309) in the those first 16 games.
Olivet was 12-4 overall to start the week and was averaging 102.2 points per game.
