'Ignorant' to call diversity a strength
The Dec. 30 opinion column titled “Recognizing Diversity as a Strength” stated that “America's strength lies in its diversity.” This is an ignorant statement. Our greatness lies in our freedom, democracy, capitalism, individualism, and the Constitution. Without these, our diversity would be meaningless.
Secondly, diversity within one country has never been good. Recent history shows us the instability of the Soviet Union, Yugoslavia, and the Austrian Empire. America is famous for taking the good ideas of diverse cultures as our new immigrants assimilate into our American culture (the melting pot).
Remaining diverse within one country (mosaic) will eventually, as always, lead to problems. Teddy Roosevelt said “the immigrant who comes here in good faith to become an American, and assimilates himself to us, shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else. But this is predicated upon the person becoming in every facet an American. We have room for one flag, one American language, and one American loyalty.”
