Lombard Police recruiting for Citizen Police Academy

The Lombard Police Department will hold its 21st Citizen Police Academy beginning on March 1.

“The Citizen Police Academy program provides members of the Lombard community a behind-the-scenes view of the workings of their police department,” said Jim Krupka, Lombard CPA Alumni Association President. “Classes offer participants an opportunity to become closely acquainted with the roles and responsibilities of the Lombard Police Department. Individuals have the chance, in a hands-on atmosphere to see and understand the many different facets of police work,” Krupka added.

The 10-week classes are held free of charge every Tuesday from 7-9:30 p.m. The purpose of the academy is to give citizens living or working in Lombard an understanding of modern police procedures and the challenges officers face. Lombard officers teach all classes so participants get it straight from the front line.

“The weekly classes provide a unique insight into what officers encounter during the performance of their duties; as well as types of situations they are in, often times requiring quick decision-making, “ added Krupka.

Topics covered include traffic stops, firearm training, search and seizure laws, defensive tactics training and other hands-on instruction. Participants have found the classes exciting and students have an enjoyable yet educational experience.

The CPA program is a great opportunity for citizens to get to know their force and get a hands-on experience of what police work is all about. Students say they never look at the police the same once they have gone through the classes.

“The goal of the academy is to produce informed citizens and to open the lines of communication between the community and their police department,” said Krupka. “Everyone I know who has participated in the program leaves with a very different outlook on the Lombard Police Department,” he added.

Although class size is limited, citizens interested in applying are encouraged to contact Barb Bartolotte at (630) 873-4471 for an application. Applications are also available at the front desk of the police department or on the village website, www.villageoflombard.org.
