Two teens arrested in Antioch car burglaries
Two teens have been arrested and charged with burglarizing cars in and around Oakwood Knolls subdivision, Antioch police said Friday.
Zachary Deering, 18, of the 100 block of Oakwood Drive in Antioch, and Zachary Powell, 17, of the 22000 block of 121st Street in Bristol, WI., were arrested as they exited a vehicle in the 100 block of Oakwood Drive, Chief Craig Somerville said.
Police were called to the subdivision at 1:35 a.m. on Jan. 4 with reports of suspicious subjects in the neighborhood. Upon arrival, officers saw Deering and Powell rifling through a car, Somerville said. The two were arrested as they exited carrying a GPS unit and a power cord, he added.
The two are each charged with one count of burglary to a motor vehicle, but police said their investigation has indicated they could be involved in at least 15 vehicles burglaries in the subdivision. Somerville the case is under investigation and additional charges are expected.
“Due to the alert actions of a resident, who called police after hearing his dog barking, these subjects were apprehended and further incidents were prevented,” Somerville said. “This is an example of law enforcement and the community working together to curb criminal activity.”
Powell and Deering also have been charged with unlawful consumption of alcohol by a minor.
Both were taken to Lake County jail, where Powell is held on $20,000 bond and Deering on $5,000 bond. They are expected to be in court Jan. 10.
All property recovered in the thefts have been returned to their rightful owners, Somerville said.
