Roads dangerous after rain, snow
A snow-rain mix made driving conditions especially difficult for motorists and contributed to dozens of accidents on suburban roadways Friday night, officials said.
Illinois state police dealt with more than 100 reports of accidents on area expressways, including spinouts and cars in ditches, said Sgt. Tony Ostrowski.
“I've been here for 8 hours and the phone hasn't stopped ringing for more than two minutes,” he said.
Police implemented their emergency snow plan in the middle of rush hour that continued late Friday night.
Meanwhile, salt trucks tried to keep up with black ice that formed on area roads.
In Lombard and Villa Park, officials debated shutting down North Avenue between Route 83 and I-355 because of icy conditions, until salt finally began to take effect, police said.
