Juvenile with gun shot dead by off-duty Aurora cop
An off-duty Aurora police officer shot dead a male juvenile Friday afternoon when he came across the youth shooting a gun at a group of teens, authorities said.
The officer was driving near the intersection of Fifth Street and South Avenue on Aurora's southeast side at 3:28 p.m. when he came across the shooting with the juvenile, according to Dan Ferrelli of the Aurora Police Department.
The officer exited his car, identified himself and ordered the youth to drop his gun. When he did not comply, the officer shot him, Ferrelli said.
The youth, whose identity was not released, was taken to Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora where he was pronounced dead around 5:30 p.m. after being taken in for surgery, Ferrelli said. An autopsy is pending.
There were no other injuries reported.
A weapon was recovered by officers at the scene.
The officer, an 11-year veteran of the Aurora force, will be reassigned to administrative duties pending the outcome of an internal investigation into the shooting by the department's Investigative Deadly Force Team. Ferrelli said that is standard procedure after any officer-involved shooting.
