Hawthorn Woods pedestrian killed

A 77-year-old Hawthorn Woods woman was killed when she was hit by a car while trying to cross Quentin Road, authorities said Friday.

Ruth Cameron, of the 0 to 100 block of Quentin, was crossing the street after retrieving her mail at 5:52 p.m. Thursday when she was struck by an automobile, Lake County Coroner Dr. Richard Keller said.

Cameron was taken to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington, where she was pronounced dead about 7 p.m., Keller said.

Hawthorn Woods Police officials said in a news release that the driver of the vehicle, a 35-year-old Palatine man, was not injured in the crash. The vehicle he was driving was heading south on Quentin when the accident occurred.

Police said Cameron was dressed in dark clothing when she crossed the street, which may have contributed to the cause of the crash.

Drugs an alcohol do not appear to be a factor in the accident, officials said, but toxicology results are pending.

The crash is being investigated by the Hawthorn Woods Police Department and the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team. No charges have been filed in the case.

The crash resulted in Quentin Road being closed for about three hours, officials said.
