There are many paths to God
I am writing in response to the letter submitted by Carpentersville resident Mark Foley. I am saddened that The Daily Herald would allow Fence Post to be used a forum for proselytizing. To state, “it is only this group who will ultimately be united in God's household,” i.e. only Christians, is so offensive that I am compelled to write to the paper.
I am so weary of people claiming that their particular faith has a monopoly on the truth. It then seems appropriate to me that anyone could use any written word or book to justify their particular opinion or belief. If that were acceptable, then “Mein Kampf” could be quoted and used as a reference book containing truths. Surely the Holocaust provided the horrendous results of that type of thinking.
It seems to me that a person of faith is tolerant and believes that there are many paths to God. He is humble and realizes that he does not own the truth. He knows that acceptance and knowledge of another way of thinking and believing does not diminish his faith but rather enhances it. He builds bridges where possible and desires to live in a world filled with rainbows of many different colors. This is my hope.
