Hazmat spill at O'Hare not lethal

Chicago firefighters said a suspected radioactive spill discovered this morning at O'Hare International Airport turned out to be a nonlethal, nonthreatening leak in a storage facility at 10000 O'Hare Way.

Chicago Fire Department spokesman Richard Rosado said a crushed container at the storage facility began leaking a strange substance at about 7 a.m. this morning, prompting employees to contact the Chicago Fire Department to inspect the package.

He said fire fighters wearing protective suits inspected the substance and determined it was no t lethal or harmful at about 7:30 a.m.

He said the clean up was handed over to O'Hare officials and fire fighters left the scene at 7:45 a.m.

He said no one was injured in the early morning scare.

Karen Price, spokeswoman for the Chicago Department of Aviation, said the spill did not impact passenger flight operations.
