Buckner back in baseball

BROCKTON, Mass. — The Boston Red Sox player long associated with the team's now-defunct "curse" will try to work some managerial magic in Massachusetts.

The Brockton Rox of the independent Can-Am League announced Tuesday that Bill Buckner will manage the team this summer.

Buckner had 2,715 career hits, but he's most famous for an error that cost the Red Sox Game 6 of the 1986 World Series.

The Red Sox lost the series, perpetuating talk the team was "cursed" to go without championships after selling Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees in 1920. The Red Sox ended curse talk by winning the 2004 and 2007 World Series.

In a statement, Buckner said he's excited to return to Massachusetts. Rox CEO Chris Carminucci praised Buckner's vast baseball knowledge, and called it a "great day" for the Rox.
