Grieving for fallen firefighters
The recent tragic loss of two brother firefighters in Chicago reminds us of the sobering truth that ours is a rewarding yet dangerous profession.
It is, however, a profession that we have all volunteered for. There is not a person on the job who took the oath so that they could get their picture in the paper or earn a medal. We don't seek fame or recognition for our actions. We do what is expected of us and so much more, because of who we are. We are firefighters. It is the very fabric of our soul and it is impossible for us to separate our working lives from our family lives. When we go home, we don't stop being public servants; we shovel snow for our neighbors, we are scout leaders, coaches and PTA volunteers.
As we gather with our families and celebrate with our loved ones this holiday season, we will also grieve with our family of firefighters in Chicago. Please remember them and keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
