Lysacek wins Munson Award for charitable work

Olympic champion and Naperville native Evan Lysacek has won the Thurman Munson Award for his charitable work.

The figure skater, who won gold at the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver, joins baseball players Mike Piazza, Nick Swisher and Angel Pagan, as well as basketball player Devin Harris, among the 2011 award winners announced Tuesday by the AHRC-New York City Foundation.

According to its website, the foundation supports programs that assist children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities to live full and productive lives.

Lysacek and the other four athletes were selected for excellence on and off the field, with charitable work and community involvement the dominant criteria. Lysacek is a member of the board of Figure Skating in Harlem, which teaches girls academic and life skills through ice skating, and serves on the celebrity board of Ronald McDonald House Charities.

Lysacek will receive the award, named for the late Yankees' catcher, at a Feb. 1 dinner in New York.
