St. Charles North senior earns Eagle Scout award

Greg Erickson, a senior at St. Charles North High School, received his Eagle Scout award Nov. 21. Erickson is a member of Boy Scout Troop 13 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church and has been a Scout for 12 years. He is the son of Gordon and Connie Erickson of St. Charles.

An Eagle Scout is required to earn 21 merit badges, of which 12 are required. Erickson earned 21 merit badges including wood carving, cooking, fishing, climbing, emergency preparedness, swimming, first aid, communications, citizenship in the community, art, rowing, wilderness survival, personal fitness, citizenship in the nation, sports, environmental science, family life, camping, snow sports, personal management, and citizenship in the world. He received the God and Me Religious Award in 2003 and the Arrow of Light in 2004.

His Eagle Project was construction of two meeting areas at the Riverwoods Christian Center in St. Charles. Working with Dennis Lopnow, the camp coordinator, he and his fellow scouts in Troop 13, family and friends created fire bowls for each of two cabins. Each fire bowl consists of a raised fire pit and four benches that seat up to four adults each. The meeting areas are adjacent to the cabins and are easily accessible to anyone staying there.

Scouting has taught Erickson leadership skills, how to be a mentor, and many other skills that will be useful throughout his life.

Along with scouting, Erickson enjoys playing lacrosse at St. Charles North, skiing, traveling, spending time with friends, concerts and working at Kwalyti Tool in Batavia. Erickson plans to attend a four-year college in Colorado after graduation.
