Man accused of obstruction in homicide probe

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. — A southwestern Illinois man is accused of obstructing the investigation into the killing and dismemberment of a woman whose remains were found behind a shopping center.

Madison County prosecutors have charged 24-year-old Steven Peterson of East Alton with felony obstruction of justice. Authorities contend Peterson falsely accused a family member and another person of killing Crystal Terpening and disposing of her body.

Peterson's bond was set at $75,000 bond. He doesn't have a listed home telephone number, and it isn't clear if he has retained an attorney.

Terpening's remains were found Nov. 4.

Prosecutors last month charged another East Alton man with first-degree murder, dismemberment of a body and concealing a homicide. Authorities allege he met Tharp on Oct. 12 and killed her later that night by striking her.
