Car sparks Bartlett duplex fire

A car malfunction inside a Bartlett garage started a fire that left one unit of a duplex uninhabitable Monday night.

Fire investigators said an electrical malfunction in one of two cars parked in an attached garage the home on the 1000 block of Georgian Place sparked a blaze that lit both cars on fire and spread into the living area of the home.

The Bartlett Fire Protection District was dispatched to the fire at 6:56 p.m. Monday and reported a “heavily involved garage fire” when crews arrived at the house.

Thirty-four firefighters were on the scene of the blaze, which took nearly 30 minutes to bring under control, according to the fire district.

There were no injuries to the residents or firefighters, but the family is staying with relatives due to heat and smoke damage throughout the home, according to the fire district.

Damages to the home are estimated at $150,000, with the contents loss estimated at $60,000.

The other unit in the duplex sustained minor smoke damage but remains habitable, according to fire officials.
