Ex-Illinois' Zenger takes reigns at KU

LAWRENCE, Kan. — A western Kansas native who led Illinois State's athletic resurgence has been introduced as the next athletic director at the University of Kansas.

Sheahon Zenger will take over Feb. 1 at Kansas, where a ticket scandal and ethics questions prompted former AD Lew Perkins to retire a year before he originally planned.

The 44-year-old Zenger has coached football at Drake, Kansas State, South Florida and Wyoming. He received a bachelor's degree from Kansas State in 1987 and master's degree from the same school in 1992. He earned a doctorate from Kansas in 1996.

During his tenure at Illinois State, fundraising rose sharply, the athletics department had record-high grade point averages over the past four years, and attendance rose dramatically at football and basketball games.
