SUV falls into Hampshire ditch
A car clipped an SUV heading east on Route 20 and Arrowhead Drive in Hampshire Saturday morning, an act that sent the sport-utility vehicle down an embankment and into a 5 to 6-foot ditch, authorities said.
The 54-year-old Belvidere woman driving the SUV was taken to Provena St. Joseph Hospital with nonlife threatening injuries, following a 20-minute extrication, said Jeanne Maki, of the Hampshire Fire Protection District.
One of the people in the car was driven to the same hospital with nonlife threatening injuries, while the second person refused medical attention, Maki said.
The car hit the SUV on the driver's side and the SUV landed right side up in the ditch, Maki said. Firefighters were dispatched to the scene at 6:19 a.m.
The accident site is 5 miles west of Route 47, near Burlington and authorities blocked the intersection for 20 minutes while the extrication occurred, Maki said.
Citations were issued in the crash, but police were not available Saturday to say who received them.
Fire fighters from the Burlington Fire Protection District assisted.
