Officials say nature will repair Ind. Dunes damage

PORTER, Ind. — Officials say damage to the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and surrounding areas from a winter storm that caused massive waves should go away with time.

National Park Service spokeswoman Lynda Lancaster told The Times of Munster that the natural removal of sand occurs annually in the fall and spring months, as sand is deposited in sandbars up and down the shore. Over time, waves and wind will redeposit the sand on shore. She says it may take more than a year, though.

Dunes State Park assistant property manager Doug Stukey says he's already seeing sandbars form offshore.

Porter Building Commissioner Art Elwood says concerns that were raised immediately after the storm hit have subsided.
