South Elgin robbery suspect might've had accomplice, police say
Police say the man who robbed a Jewel store in South Elgin Tuesday night may have been assisted by a getaway driver.
Video surveillance from the store suggests the robber, who took an undisclosed amount of money from a cash register, jumped into a dark colored Chevy Tahoe or GMC Yukon that was driven by someone else, police said Wednesday afternoon. The vehicle headed onto Gyorr Avenue after leaving the parking lot of the store after 7 p.m. at 375 Randall Road, according to Sgt. Randy Endean of the South Elgin Police Department.
The video hasn't yet been made public.
The suspect, described as a black male approximately 6 feet tall with a heavy build, grabbed a bottle of water from a cooler near the register, went to pay for it, but when the cash register was open, he lunged across the conveyor belt and took the money. As he headed for the exit, an employee stood in his way, but was shoved to the side, Endean said.
There was no weapon displayed nor implied, he said.
The suspect, who is wanted for robbery and aggravated battery, was wearing dark pants, a dark colored hoodie and appeared to have some facial hair.
