Local skin-lightening products might contain mercury
SPRINGFIELD — Illinois officials are warning retailers to check skin-lightening lotions and creams closely because they might contain mercury.
The Environmental Protection Agency says the toxic metal was discovered in several creams sold in the Chicago area.
Officials say retailers should not sell skin products if they are not labeled and should use special precautions when dealing with imported cosmetics that might use unfamiliar names for mercury.
Authorities in several states have found high levels of mercury in skin-lightening products imported from China, the Dominican Republic, India, Mexico and other countries.
Using the products could cause rashes, irritation and other changes to the skin. Mercury may also be absorbed through the skin and potentially affect the nervous system and kidneys.
