Libertyville nets Sky's weekly honor
The Chicago Sky has named the Libertyville girls basketball its high school girls team of the week for the week of Dec. 29 for its excellence on and off the basketball court.
Libertyville is 15-0 and ranked in the top 10 by the Daily Herald. The Wildcats recently defeated Hoffman Estates and Zion-Benton to become Mundelein Holiday Classic Tournament champions.
In the 41-29 win over Zion-Benton to win the tournament, senior guard Savannah Trees led the way with 17 points while senior forward Kaca Savatic had 11 rebounds. Libertyville will resume play after winter break on Jan. 5 against Lake Forest.
Off the court, the Libertyville girls' basketball program is very active in the community. Each year the team holds a shoot-a-thon, with half of the money they raise going to a charity that the varsity team chooses. The team has raised close to $8,000 dollars since they started and has set a goal to raise $3,500 for this year's event. Wildcats games also serve as ways to raise money for charities. Last year the team raised money for the American Red Cross and Haitian earthquake victims.
The Libertyville girls basketball team will be provided a complementary Team Night Out ticket package to a 2011 Sky regular-season home game at Allstate Arena, where they will have the opportunity to watch the world's best female basketball players. They will meet and talk to Sky players and coaches before the game and be honored on the Sky court during the game. They will also have the Sky experience brought to one of their home games.
The Sky will be recognizing one high school girls basketball team each week throughout the season as part of its high school girls Team of the Week program.
The Sky is now accepting nominations from parents, coaches, faculty members and players. Nomination forms can be accessed and submitted at www.chicagosky.net or can be requested by mail.
