Parent-child joys are cherished

I enjoyed Susan Estrich's column: “The desires of the heart of a grown-up,” Dec. 19.

As a father with three small children, I agree that we often relive our childhood through our children and, by focusing on the positive experiences of my own childhood, I try to recreate them for my own children.

Recently, I visited Chicago (as I frequently do) to perform experiments at Argonne National Laboratory.

On this visit, my father celebrated his 77th birthday — still going strong as a chemistry professor and musician in the Chicago area — and I felt deeply fortunate to spend some quality time with him on this special occasion.

Realizing that time always marches irrevocably forward and that our life on Earth is finite, I cherish these opportunities to celebrate life and am forever grateful for them.

By the way, happy birthday to Susan!
