Creche is absent, but not Christmas spirit

Both last year and this year I've missed the Nativity scene/creche that used to be on display near the gazebo at the intersection of Hough and Main streets in downtown Barrington as I wait at the stop light. Where did it go? I know it used to get vandalized, and once there was a small fire.

The prominent spot for viewing seemed to be a nice way to keep us focused on the true meaning of Christmas. How unfortunate we've lost that attempt at such a homage due to . . . I'm not sure what. Somehow the absence of that creche makes me feel His presence even more and more determined to say “merry Christmas” instead of “happy holidays” and to spread more holiday spirit in any small way I can to those I know and meet not only now, but throughout the year.

Merry Christmas, and happy birthday, Jesus.
