Black ice causing area traffic accidents

Police officials are warning motorists to slow down this morning due to icy conditions produced from the fog and cold weather.

The early morning icy conditions are being blamed for a slew of accidents on Route 14 between Lake Barrington and Fox River Grove.

Fox River Grove Detective Gary Mlekush said the ice was “horrible” early Wednesday on Route 14, where at least three accidents took place over within an hour.

He said the worst was an accident with injuries at Route 14 at Kelsey Road in Lake Barrington, he said.

Details of that crash are still unknown at this time, but Mlekush said at least one person was injured and the icy conditions are to blame.

“There was a slew of crashes in that area because of the black ice,” he said. “We had salt trucks out there to break it up, so it should be a little better now. But, people should still slow down.”

Master Sgt. R. Story of the Illinois State Police said there are some icy conditions on the roadways and people should use continue to use caution.

“It's normal winter driving conditions,” he said.” The roads were wet last night, it got cold, and froze. So, people should slow down and use caution.”

I-94 between Kenosha and Racine counties in Wisconsin is also extremely icy, officials said, and people are expected to use caution when driving up north.
