Ex-worker pleads guilty in Valparaiso office shooting

VALPARAISO, Ind. — A former state Department of Workforce Development auditor has pleaded guilty to charges he fired a shotgun into an agency office in northwestern Indiana.

Sixty-year-old Edgar Tillery admitted during a Porter County court hearing Monday that he shot out the door of the Portage office.

Authorities believe Tillery was trying to kill the office manager with a shotgun he retrieved from his car after receiving an unfavorable job review.

Tillery pleaded guilty to a felony count of attempted aggravated battery and faces between six years and 20 years in prison when he is sentenced Feb. 14. Tillery told the judge he had stopped taking medication for possible depression.

The shooting happened days before Gov. Mitch Daniels signed a law prohibiting employers from banning guns in locked cars on company property.
