Big Ten honors Shurna with player of week award
Northwestern forward John Shurna earned Big Ten Player of the Week honors for the second time this season and the fourth time in his career.
The former Glenbard West averaged 27 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 2 blocked shots per game in leading the Wildcats to a pair of victories last week. The 6-foot-8 junior shot 76 percent from the field, helping Northwestern to its first 7-0 start since the 1993-94 season. Shurna's 10-for-11 (.909) performance from the field in Monday's 81-65 win over Long Island ranks as a tie for the second-best single-game effort in school history.
In the 78-62 victory over American, the Glen Ellyn native scored 28 points, surpassing the 1,000 career point mark in the process, while also recording three blocks and three steals.
Ohio State's Jared Sullinger also earned Freshman of the Week honors for the fifth time this season. For the week, the 6-9 freshman averaged 20.5 points and 11 rebounds in wins against Florida Gulf Coast and the Gamecocks.
