One injured in Elgin home fire

A man was injured in a small house fire Saturday afternoon, Elgin fire officials said.

Firefighters responded to an emergency call at a rental home on the 600 block of Grand Avenue shortly before 4 p.m., where they found a fire in a bedroom with a 39-year-old resident inside.

“He was found and removed by our firefighters,” Elgin fire Chief Robb Cagann said.

The mattress had been on fire, according to a news release. The man was taken to Sherman Hospital in Elgin with first- and second-degree burns over 25 percent of his body, Cagann said

Fire officials said the man's fiancee called 911 when she arrived home and smelled smoke coming from the bedroom. Elgin firefighters put out the fire within 90 minutes. According to Cagann, the structure itself sustained minimal damage.

“There was virtually no damage to the building. Most of the damage was to the bed area,” Cagann said.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined by the Elgin fire investigation team.
