For Sale: One Lake County school, slightly used, unfurnished

The Lake Zurich Unit District 95 school board unanimously approved putting the old Charles Quentin Elementary School and property up for sale Thursday night.

As District 95 tries to cut back on costs, Jeff King, assistant superintendent for business and operations, said it was time to try to sell the school.

Quentin closed in June 2009 due to declining enrollment in the district.

King said it costs the district $75,000 a year to maintain the building, including water, electricity, alarm systems and keeping the lawns mowed.

The school has about 10 acres of land. When it was assessed last year as a vacant property its value was estimated at more than $1 million.

King said he thought that with the school on it, the land would be worth more, but assessors had trouble finding comparable properties with which to make an accurate assessment.

If the school district does not get a bid, they will find a broker to help market the property, officials said.

King said there has not been any expressed interest in the property so far.

The desks, cabinets and other classroom materials left inside Quentin have been put to use in other District 95 schools, King added. He said most of it was in good condition.
