DuPage man charged with impersonating ATF agent

A man was being held Friday morning in DuPage County jail on charges he impersonated a police officer.

James Miller, 52, is accused of representing himself as a “special agent with the ATF” while possessing a fake badge, a bulletproof vest and an oscillating light, prosecutors said.

Assistant State's Attorney Debora Brewer said at a bond hearing Friday that Miller was arrested in connection with a surveillance operation targeting prostitution in Downers Grove. Authorities later found about 30 weapons in his home, she said.

Judge Liam Brennan set bond at $50,000, meaning Miller would have to post $5,000 to be released.

At the hearing, Brennan asked whether Miller worked.

“I am an ATF special investigator,” Miller responded. “That's what the confusion was yesterday.”

Miller is charged with false impersonation of a police officer and unlawful use of a weapon. Should he post bond, he must surrender any weapons as a condition of his release, the judge said.

Prosecutors said Miller has no prior criminal history and is a licensed firearm owner.
