EPA sets cleanup deadlines for suburban pipeline spill
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has set a series of deadlines for the cleanup of an oil pipeline spill outside of Chicago.
The spill was discovered Tuesday by officials responding to a complaint about petroleum odors.
The EPA says the pipeline near Lockport was shut down within an hour after the leak was discovered.
The pipeline is owned by West Shore Pipe Line Co. and operated by Buckeye Pipe Line Co.
The EPA order issued Friday requires the companies to develop plans to finish the cleanup and restoration of the spill area.
EPA officials say the spill is near wetlands that house several endangered species.
Federal officials say about 21,000 gallons of oil were released in Lockport and Romeoville, about 35 miles southwest of Chicago.
