Writer's immigration stance illogical
Sue Tiedeman of Elgin: I'm sure you are probably a nice person. Uninformed, but nice.
While you are correct that the flow of immigrants from Europe looked much different from the stream of people coming from Mexico, their reasons are the same jobs. The fact that there was no government assistance back in the good old days had no bearing then just as it has none now.
You decry the fact that the children of immigrants, presumably illegal, are going to school on your taxes but you seem to have forgotten that if their parents are working they are also paying taxes so, believe it or not, they are paying their share. On the other hand, illegals don't file returns so they are not claiming tax refunds, they don't report employer abuse and they also avoid calling police when crime occurs so the “easy” path you refer to perhaps isn't so easy.
Would it be your desire that those who happened to be born here to illegal parents be deprived of the opportunity for education, thus ensuring another generation of poverty? Who do you suppose pays for welfare, ADC and other entitlement programs?
You don't have to be one of us “bleeding hearts” to agree just do the math.
