Marcus returns to profitability in its 2nd quarter

MILWAUKEE — Marcus Corp. returned to profitability in its fiscal second quarter, as the prior-year period included some hefty charges.

The lodging and movie theater operator reported on Thursday that its net income was $2.1 million, or 7 cents per share, in the quarter ended Nov. 25. That compares with a loss of $323,000, or a penny per share, a year earlier.

The year-ago period included a one-time theatre pension withdrawal liability of $1.4 million and a hotel impairment charge of $2.6 million, totaling about 8 cents per share.

Revenue increased 4 percent to $86.7 million from $83.4 million. Revenue at Marcus Hotels and Resorts climbed 13 percent.

Revenue per available room, a key gauge of a hotel operator's health, rose 14.5 percent mostly on increased occupancy.

Marcus' movie theater unit, Marcus Theatres, owns or manages 684 screens at 55 locations in Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota and Ohio, and a family entertainment center in Wisconsin. Its lodging division, Marcus Hotels and Resorts, owns or manages 19 hotels, resorts and other properties in 10 states.
