Caterpillar, UAW start talks with public silence
Caterpillar Inc. and the United Auto Workers have started negotiations on a new contract for about 9,500 workers in the Peoria area and Aurora, as well as out of state in Pennsylvania, Colorado and Tennessee.
But The Journal Star newspaper in Peoria reports that both sides agreed Wednesday that they won't say anything publicly about how those negotiations are going while they talk.
The first day's meeting lasted an hour. Negotiators from Peoria-based Caterpillar and the union will meet again Thursday.
The existing contract expires in March 2011. In addition to Peoria-area workers it covers employees in Aurora, Decatur and Pontiac.
Some workers in York, Pa., Denver, Colo., and Memphis, Tenn. are also covered. Some of the terms also affect more than 20,000 of the company's retirees.
