Roads reopen in NW Indiana after drifts cleared

LAPORTE, Ind. — All highways in northwestern Indiana have reopened a day after crews worked for hours to clear deep drifts that stranded numerous travelers overnight.

Indiana Department of Transportation spokesman Jim Pinkerton said many roads in LaPorte and Porter counties remained snow packed and some blowing and drifting continued on Tuesday.

More than 100 vehicles were stuck Monday on rural sections of U.S. 30 and Indiana 2 in the LaPorte and Valparaiso areas. State officials sent 18 trucks and 31 drivers from the Indianapolis area and southern Indiana to help clear roads hit by up to 20 inches of lake-effect snow.
