Meter and music of poetry workshop in Palatine

The Northwest Cultural Council Second Saturday Poetry Workshop from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Dec. 11, will be led by poet Virginia Bell.

The topic will be Songs of Ourselves: A Gentle Introduction to Meter and the Music of Poetry.

Drawing on Robert Pinsky's “The Sounds of Poetry,” this workshop will begin with a brief and gentle introduction to the concept of meter and explain a few metrical terms. It will examine some basic forms of meter in poets such as Thomas Campion, Louise Glück, and William Carlos Williams. Bring copies of your own poems formal or free verse to distribute and discuss during the workshop.

Virginia Bell is an associate editor of RHINO and an adjunct professor at Loyola University.

Workshops are at the Palatine Public Library, 700 N. North Court, the second Saturday of each month and cost $15. RSVP to (847) 382-6922 or e-mail nwcc@northwestculturalcouncil.org.
