Three authors selected for Naperville Reads

The 10th annual Naperville Reads celebration will feature the works of three award-winning authors: Jon Scieszka, Anthony Horowitz and Rebecca Skloot.

All three authors are scheduled to make Naperville appearances during March or April and there will be a variety of public book discussions, presentations and other activities tied to the citywide program.

Naperville Reads started in 2002 as a way to provide Naperville residents with a way to share their reading experiences and enhance their understanding of the featured books and the authors who wrote them.

Scieszka will headline the first public author event at 7 p.m. March 15 at North Central College's Pfeiffer Hall, 310 E. Benton Ave. Horowitz will present his program at 7 p.m. April 12 at the same location.

Skloot is scheduled to appear April 20, but final details have not been worked out.

Scieszka grew up in Flint, Mich., with what he would admit was an offbeat view of life.

His most popular titles include “The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales,” “Math Curse,” “The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs,” “Squids Will Be Squids” and “The Frog Prince Continued.” His latest book, “Baloney (Henry P.),” is due out in May.

Horowitz long has been one of the top writers in England. His highly successful Alex Rider novels featuring a 14-year-old British spy include “Stormbreaker,” “Point Blank,” “Skeleton Key,” “Eagle Strike,” “Snakehead” and most recently “Crocodile Tears.”

He also created the award-winning detective series “Foyle's War” and more recently “Collision.” He has written television episodes for “Poirot,” “Murder in Mind” and “Midsomer Murders.”

Skloot wrote “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks,” which The New York Times listed among its Notable Books of 2010.

Naperville Reads is a partnership among Anderson's Bookshop, Naperville Public Library, Naperville Unit District 203 and Indian Prairie Unit District 204. The project is partially supported by a grant from the city.

Previous featured authors have included Neil Gaiman, Gary Paulsen, Daniel Pink, Dan Gutman. Pete Hamill, Tracy Chevalier, Yann Martel, Kate DiCamillo, Jodi Picoult and Lisa See.
