Lake Zurich Dist. 95 may sell school, land

Lake Zurich Unit District 95 may try to sell the shuttered Charles Quentin Elementary School property near Kildeer.

District 95's assistant superintendent for business and operations, Jeff King, said at a meeting Thursday night that annual costs make it prohibitive to keep the building and the land on West Shirley Road.

School board members have formed a resolution that would authorize the sale of the 41,000-square-foot building and 10 acres. A formal vote on the intent to sell the property is expected Dec. 16.

Quentin Elementary had served children in kindergarten through second grade. Declining enrollment was cited by District 95 board members as the reason to shut Quentin in June 2009.

Two other District 95 schools absorbed the students who would have attended Quentin Elementary, which is in unincorporated Lake County just east of Rand Road and on the edge of Shops of Kildeer.

At Thursday's District 95 board meeting, King said maintenance and other costs to hang on to Quentin Elementary amount to roughly $75,000 per year. Of that total, it costs about $50,000 for the structure's sewer service.

Board member James Burke said it no longer makes financial sense to continue owning the school building and the 10 acres.
