Convenient 'truth' about government?
I'm guessing Alexander Lee (Nov. 26 Fence Post) has been fed the same misinformation about government-run health plans, government-run automakers, government-run pharmaceuticals, etc. that those with more attention for ideology than facts have been consuming.
There is no government-run health plan (other than Medicare), largely thanks to the efforts of people like Mr. Lee who scream “socialism” any time the government becomes involved in the affairs of the private sector. The government owns a good-size chunk of GMC and Chrysler, but GM is starting to turn around and Uncle Sam will soon be out of the company at a profit.
Finance firms who were bailed out are also repaying their money faster than expected, with the government at least breaking even. The health care bill never set up government-run drug companies. In fact, these same companies actually got the government to agree not to use its bargaining power to negotiate lower prescription drug prices.
I have seen the future of our political discourse, and it's quite ugly, should people concerned with only those “truths” convenient to their belief system dominate the discussion.
