Fishermen: beware unsafe ice conditions
Not to be a stick in the mud, but I strongly urge those of you with fire in your belly and a truck loaded with ice-fishing gear to put on the brakes.
Unless you care to make the long drive in to Canada and suffer the tedious trek, I suggest you put ice fishing on the back burner for the time being.
Usually one of the first fishable ice-angling location is in the infamous Fox Valley Gardens back channels, right off the Fox River.
Even this “sacred first ice” location had a covering of skim ice, which is nowhere near safe factor for those of us eager to start catching slabs through the frozen stuff.
In the meantime …
•Perch fishing on Lake Michigan continues to bring the die-hards out from the comfort of their warm homes. Montrose, Navy Pier, and 95th Street are hot spots right now.
