Give equal space to gun rights advocates

On the Friday after Thanksgiving, your editors saw fit to run a huge series from The Washington Post on how legally purchased guns have been obtained by felons, and how they were used in murders. In four half-pages replete with pictures, the writer makes an implicit case to repeal the constitutionally guaranteed right of American citizens to own firearms.

Are there any balancing comments from supporters of the Second Amendment? No. Are there any stories about citizens successfully defending their homes against invaders? No. Check with the National Rifle Association. They have hundreds on file.

This kind of advocacy “journalism” is in lock step with attempts by the United Nations to ban personal gun ownership worldwide, and to bring the United States into compliance with nations like the United Kingdom and Australia, where laws against citizen gun ownership have seen crime rates skyrocket. If a criminal were to break into your home with intent to rob, rape, murder and burn, would you prefer to be armed and defend your family and yourself, or to be horrendous victims like Dr. William Petit's wife and daughters in Connecticut last July?
