Charges upgraded for Aurora man accused of beating dog

An Aurora man faces possible prison time after being indicted this week on felony animal cruelty charges.

A Kane County grand jury has indicted Phillip Rinn, 41, of the 300 block of Kendal Street. He is accused of beating his dog Magda, a 1½-year-old Labrador-shepherd mix, on Nov. 15 and breaking several of the dog's teeth.

Rinn is due in court Dec. 29 and faces one to three years in prison if convicted, but probation also is an option.

He originally charged with a misdemeanor but its was dropped Wednesday and authorities pursued upgraded charges after the dog's injuries were examined.

Rinn served a month in jail after a 1993 case in which he chained a dog to his vehicle and dragged it to death, according to sheriff's reports and court records.
