Yohn getting back into it at Bradley
St. Edward alum Katie Yohn has endured some ups and downs this year on the basketball court.
Yohn, a sophomore who led the Bradley University women's basketball team in scoring last year as a freshman, recently missed a pair of games due to a concussion.
Yohn did not play in the Braves' 73-51 loss to Illinois or in a 77-72 win at Eastern Illinois.
“The concussion occurred during the game against Iowa,” Yohn explained. “I was guarding a player coming off a screen and got shouldered or head-butted in the face.”
Yohn was not a big fan of the recovery process.
“(It) was long and boring,” she said. “I couldn't watch TV, do homework, go to class, watch movies or go on my computer. I was just supposed to lay on the couch or in my bed in a dark room.”
Yohn said she's back to 100 percent on the health front.
“I passed all the impact tests required on the computer and other physical tests as well,” she said.
She recently returned to the lineup at the Cancun (Mexico) Thanksgiving Clsssic.
In Bradley's 65-62 win over William & Mary, Yohn came off the bench and scored 11 points in only 21 minutes of play.
In an 82-59 loss to Arizona in Cancun, Yohn again came off the bench and scored a team-high 14 points in only 26 minutes. She attempted 17 shots in the game, including a 3-for-11 showing from the 3-point line.
To start the season, Yohn scored 16 points in a 77-63 victory over Butler. She also had 10 points (including two 3-pointers) in a 91-53 loss to nationally ranked Iowa in Iowa City.
“I've improved in many areas from last year,” said Yohn. “My defense, jump shot, my ability to drive to the basket and my overall strength have improved.”
In her first 4 games, Yohn averaged 12.8 points per game and shot 10 for-32 from the 3-point line (. 313). She also averaged 2.5 rebounds a contest and was playing an average of 25.3 minutes.
“The best part of my game right now is my 3-point shot,” said Yohn. “I've been working on coming off screens to get open and on my footwork and release to get more shots off. My range has gotten deeper because of all of the weightlifting we've been doing the past months.”
Bradley was 3-3 heading into a midweek game at UW-Milwaukee.
“I think our team has done well this season,” said Yohn. “We have a really tough schedule and haven't had much time to rest and recover from one game to the next. It just shows you how tough our team is. We've really picked up our intensity in games and in practice. We're working hard and it's paying off. We're looking forward to the rest of our games this season and to show everyone how good we can be.”
